Remodeling Headaches

June 19th, 2008 by admin

I have started a project of remodeling a property that I recently purchased and let me tell you ,it has become a headache, it seem that there is nothing square in this existing building, they must have not had a square when they built this house. I have never seen such cobbled up framing in all my life. I don’t know who could have built such a monstrosity but they sure didn’t know any thing about building. I gotta take a aspirin and get back to work. More later.

Before the days of 4′ x 8′ sheets of plywood and drywall, squaring up a building wasn’t nearly as important. Rough framing lumber even came in random lengths so getting the framing members on 16″ or 2′ centers wasn’t that important either. Why would you waste your time framing something properly when the plastering could take all winter?

The old timers used to run the sub floor at a 45 degree angle to the floor framing members thinking it would add strength to the structure. Then nail the siding right to the studs.

It’s a darn good thing they don’t build’em like they used too!
